Ubuntu Linux 6.06

Just fed my laptop the latest Ubuntu distro, Dapper Drake (aka v6.06LTS). No, I didn't do a full install. In an effort to preserve the WinXP Pro version that I paid hard cash for, I am merely just running Ubuntu via the live CD. I've tried a live Knoppix distro before as well as Damn Small Linux (DSL), both failed to work with my WiFi card. I probably could have done some extensive research and tweaking to get the WiFi card working but I didn't want to bother. Dapper Drake is working perfectly with my WiFi card. One word to describe this experience... Awesome!! The thoughts running through my head... maybe I should just ditch WinXP Pro on this machine and run Dapper Drake exclusively or I could try configuring a dual boot option. As this is a low end IBM laptop with a 20GB hard drive, I would imagine that a dual boot option would eat too much of my precious hard drive space, but still worth considering.

I picked up a Linux magazine today that came with a DVD which has SuSe 10.1. According to the DVD packaging you can use it as a 'live' DVD or typical install. I fed the DVD to my lap top and to my dismay a message popped up at about 30secs into the boot stating that "SuSe 10.1 needs a minimum of 512Mb unshared RAM to work". While 512MB of RAM is quickly becoming the norm, I don't need that much RAM on my laptop. It does have 512MB of RAM but the video shares few megs out of it. So, SuSe 10.1 quickly was ejected and replaced with Dapper Drake. The only thing I don't like about Ubuntu Dapper Drake is the quirky name. I am still trying to get used to saying 'Ubuntu' and never got used to the previous version name, 'Breezy Badger'. They just aren't techy enough. That is the goal of Ubuntu, Linux for humans. So the reason behind the quirky names is obvious. I will have to look into why or how the names are chosen. I'm sure there is a story behind each one.

Feed your computer a copy of Ubuntu, it will thank you for it.
