Puppy Linux 3.01

I've heard about Puppy Linux in the past, but never really took the time to check it out. I don't know what prompted me to look into light-weight & small distros this evening but that is what I did. I currently have it running on my IBM laptop, which is older but has a ton of RAM and the performance of this distro is awesome. It did take me a few minutes to setup the wireless networking, but I was impressed w/ the way Puppy Linux kind of walks you through it. Definitely not for the novice computer user. My wife wouldn't have been able to set it up. Unlike other live distros, this one will allow you to save your settings/files to either hard drive, cd-rom or USB/flash drive upon exit. So even though you are using a live distro it will be like you have a portable computer in your pocket. Just find any computer with either CD-ROM drive or USB port and it might as well be yours.

Even my wife thinks this distro is cute, it barks at you when you initially boot it up. I just might get her to switch to Linux after all.

Late

Once again Linux has me up until 1am. I spent about 1hr 30min trying to get that PowerJournal app to work on Ubuntu. The application is written in Java and I haven't had any success with getting it to work. I've posted at the SourceForge webpage. I doubt I will hear anything back. It seems as though that project has been abandoned. Tired.

Gnome Blog App for LInux

Check out this application Gnome Blog. In my quest for a journal/diary application I have came across this application. Not sure if it is worth anything yet. It appears to at least work unlike Drivel, which appears to not work with the Blogger API.

Open Source Journal Application

I’ve been looking for a journal application for a computer and I think that I have stumbled upon a good one: http://sourceforge.net/projects/powerjournal/

It’s an older piece of software but it is cross platform, free, and light-weigh (hopefully not abandoned or orphaned). It has the exact functions that I would be looking for in a computer-based journal.

Sure there are blogs, but maybe you don’t want to share everything with the public and what about when you don’t have Internet connectivity? Yes, there is Microsoft Word, but it is inefficient for keeping a day-to-day journal.

I was able to get this application to work on WindowsXP and was looking forward to getting to work on Ubuntu. Downloaded the bin file. Changed the permissions and attempted to install. Received errors telling me that there are missing directories and shared libraries. I'll try compiling from source and see if that works.

The download is only 8MB. Check it out.
